TurkamanHand KnottedRug

Black / Brown134 x 195 cm

The Turkaman rug tradition finds its roots in the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, whose weaving practices have been passed down through generations. Over time, these patterns migrated across the Middle East, evolving into the sophisticated, highly sought-after styles we recognise today, often produced in regions where the heritage of nomadic craft remains vibrant and preserved.

These rugs are defined by their use of high-quality Wool, which is often spun into a sturdy, lustrous pile. The technical precision involved in creating these pieces is what grants them their longevity; the way the Wool is knotted onto the foundation ensures that the rug can withstand the rigours of daily use while retaining its appearance and texture over many years.

Visually, Turkaman rugs are famous for their repeating motifs, most notably the gul—an octagonal medallion that symbolises the tribal identity of the weavers. These medallions are typically arranged in rows and enclosed by complex, geometric borders. This particular piece displays these traditional elements with a clarity that highlights the weaver's mastery of symmetry and colour balance.

Collectors value these rugs not only for their beauty but for the cultural narrative they carry. Owning a piece from this tradition is an investment in human skill and historical continuity. It represents a commitment to the preservation of craft, offering a sense of connection to the artisans who have perfected these techniques over centuries.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense skill and dedication. With 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this piece involves thousands of individual movements by experienced artisans, resulting in a firm, resilient pile that maintains its integrity for years.

The density achieved through this traditional method allows for the sharp definition of its intricate patterns. Such a high knot count is a mark of significant labour, reflecting months of focused work to ensure that the final result is both aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound.

Beyond the knotting process, the weight of 9.1 kg for this 195 x 134 cm piece speaks to the substantial amount of Wool used in its construction. This weight is a tangible indicator of the rug's quality and the time invested in its creation, confirming that it is built to be a lasting addition to your home.
