TurkamanHand KnottedRug

Dark red / Black134 x 195 cm

Turkaman rugs originate from the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, a region with a deep-rooted history of textile artistry. While the tradition has evolved over centuries, the signature look has been carried forward by generations of weavers in the Middle East, who have refined these patterns to reflect both cultural identity and technical expertise.

The term Turkaman refers to the specific tribal heritage and the construction techniques that define these pieces. These rugs are known for their sturdy, resilient pile, which is achieved through a precise knotting method that creates a dense and lustrous surface. This density is a hallmark of quality, ensuring that the rug can withstand generations of use while maintaining its aesthetic appeal.

Visually, these rugs are defined by their iconic geometric motifs, most notably the repeating gul or medallions that form the field. These patterns are often framed by elaborate, symbolic borders that create a sense of harmony and structure. The use of deep, resonant colours—particularly shades of red—is a defining characteristic that gives these rugs their warm and recognisable aesthetic.

Owning a Turkaman rug is an opportunity to connect with a long-standing tradition of skill and artistry. These pieces are highly valued by collectors for their cultural weight and the undeniable human effort woven into every square centimetre. They represent a bridge between the ancient traditions of the region and the modern home, offering a sense of heritage and lasting quality.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted, a process that requires immense focus and skill from the weaver. With a density of 250,000 knots per m2, the creation of this 195 x 134 cm piece represents hundreds of hours of dedicated labour, as every single knot is tied by hand to ensure the structural integrity and precision of the pattern.

The substantial weight of 9.1 kg is a direct result of this dense knotting and the quality of the materials used. This weight provides the rug with a stable, flat lay that resists curling, ensuring that the intricate geometric motifs remain sharp and clear for many years to come.

Choosing a hand-knotted rug means supporting a traditional craft that values precision over speed. The time invested in this piece is reflected in its exceptional durability and the subtle variations that only exist in items made by human hands rather than machines.
