TurkamanHand KnottedRug

Brown / Black183 x 240 cm

Turkaman rugs trace their roots to the nomadic tribes of Central Asia, where weaving was a vital expression of tribal identity and storytelling. Over centuries, these traditions migrated and evolved, with the finest contemporary examples often crafted by master weavers in the Middle East who have preserved these ancient techniques.

The term Turkaman refers to both the tribal origin and the characteristic style of the weave. These rugs are known for their sturdy construction, which is designed to withstand the rigours of nomadic life. The use of high-quality Wool ensures that the rugs are not only durable but also develop a beautiful character as they age.

The visual language of these rugs is dominated by the 'gul', a repeating medallion motif that often resembles a stylised flower or an elephant footprint. These medallions are typically arranged in a structured grid, creating a sense of balance and rhythm. The borders are equally significant, often featuring complex geometric patterns that frame the field.

Collectors value Turkaman rugs for their cultural heritage and the sheer skill required to produce them. Owning one is an investment in a long-standing craft tradition that emphasises harmony, symmetry, and endurance. Each piece serves as a link to a rich historical past, bringing a sense of grounded authenticity to the modern home.

This rug is meticulously hand-knotted by skilled artisans, a process that requires patience and exceptional attention to detail. By passing each strand of Wool through the foundation, the weaver creates a dense and durable pile that is built to last for generations.

Given the size of 240 x 183 cm and the high density of 360,000 knots per m2, this piece represents hundreds of hours of focused human effort. A higher knot count provides a more detailed, sharper pattern and increases the rug's durability, ensuring it remains an investment piece for years to come. This level of precision ensures that the intricate geometric patterns remain crisp and clear, while the overall construction provides a substantial weight of 16.7 kg, signalling the quality of the materials and the density of the weave.
