Black / Dark red60 x 98 cm

Turkaman rugs originate from the tribal traditions of the nomadic peoples across Central Asia and the Middle East. These rugs are historically renowned for their deep, earthy colour palettes and their functional, durable nature, which was essential for nomadic life where rugs served as floor coverings, blankets, and storage bags.

The term Turkaman refers to a wide range of weaving styles that have evolved over centuries. The craft relies on a complex knotting technique that creates a dense and resilient pile. This density is not just for show; it creates a lustrous surface that captures light beautifully and provides a protective layer against the elements.

A signature of the Turkaman tradition is the repeated use of the gul motif. These stylized, octagonal medallions represent the tribal identity and historical lineage of the weavers. In this piece, the formal, balanced arrangement of these motifs within a structured border is a hallmark of the sophisticated design language that collectors prize.

Owning a Turkaman rug is an opportunity to connect with a storied past. These rugs are valued not only for their aesthetic beauty but for the cultural heritage they carry. By preserving these designs, you are participating in a long-standing tradition of skill, artistry, and material excellence that remains highly relevant in contemporary homes.

This rug is entirely hand-knotted, a process that requires immense patience and precision from the weaver. By individually tying each knot onto the Cotton foundation, the artisan ensures a level of structural integrity and pattern clarity that simply cannot be achieved through mechanical production.

With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, this piece represents a significant investment of time and human skill. For a rug of this size, the sheer number of knots means that a weaver has dedicated weeks of focused effort to complete the composition, ensuring a durable and dense pile that will stand the test of time.

The combination of the Wool pile and the Cotton foundation results in a total weight of 2.1 kg, providing a grounded, high-quality feel. This weight is a direct reflection of the generous amount of materials used and the tight, careful knotting technique employed to ensure the rug lays flat and maintains its shape.
