Ziegler - A Soft Anchor for Your Living Space

This one-of-a-kind Ziegler rug from Afghanistan brings timeless elegance to any room. Its muted, earthy tones and delicate floral patterns create a calm, welcoming atmosphere in your home.

This Ziegler rug offers a beautifully tactile experience, with a soft wool pile that provides natural warmth and comfort underfoot. Its generous size makes it an ideal anchor for larger living areas, effectively grounding your furniture while adding a touch of quiet sophistication to the room.

The design features a classic, balanced floral motif set against a soft, earthy background. These gentle patterns are subtle enough to blend seamlessly with various interior styles, while the quality of the wool ensures that the rug remains durable and pleasant to touch for years to come.

Because this piece is entirely one of a kind, you are acquiring an item that exists nowhere else. No two rugs from this tradition are identical, meaning that the specific arrangement of motifs and the subtle variations in colour you see here are unique to this individual piece.

Originating from Afghanistan, this rug carries a sense of heritage that enhances the character of your home. It provides a level of sound absorption and cushioned support that brings a sense of calm and quiet to your daily living environment.

Ziegler rugs trace their origins to the late 19th century when the Swiss firm Ziegler & Co. commissioned designs specifically for Western markets. These rugs were created to capture the elegance of classical patterns while adapting them with more muted colour palettes and slightly simplified, open designs that suited the homes of the era.

The term Ziegler has since evolved to represent a specific style of Afghan rug-making that honours these early influences. Today, these pieces are celebrated for their use of high-quality wool, which is often washed to achieve a soft, aged aesthetic that makes the rugs feel as though they have been part of a home for generations.

The visual language of a Ziegler rug is defined by its characteristic floral patterns, which often feature stylised vines and blossoms arranged in an open, airy composition. Unlike more densely packed traditional rugs, the Ziegler style emphasises the interplay between the central field and the decorative borders, often using soft, natural dyes to create a harmonious look.

Owning a Ziegler rug is an investment in a living tradition. These pieces are highly valued by collectors and homeowners alike for their ability to balance historical design with modern sensibilities. By choosing one, you are bringing a piece of skilled artistry into your home that celebrates the evolution of weaving traditions.

This rug is carefully hand-knotted, a process that requires significant time and human effort to complete. With a density of 160,000 knots per m2, the creation of this piece involves over 1.5 million individual knots, each placed by hand to ensure the structural integrity and long-term durability of the pile.

The weight of 39.2 kg reflects the density and the substantial amount of high-quality wool used in its construction. This weight is a testament to the skill involved, as a rug of this scale and complexity requires months of dedicated work to achieve such precise pattern definition and a firm, resilient foundation.

Wool

Wool is a fantastic natural fibre with many benefits, it is durable and hard-wearing, which means that a rug made from wool can be used for several generations and maintain its quality. They are an excellent choice for keeping your rooms warm during the cold winter months and can reduce noise from everyday life. The material also has a natural dirt-repellent effect which makes wool rugs easy to keep clean. Wool has a natural elasticity, which means that when the pile is pressed down, it can easily bounce back to its original shape.

Cotton

Cotton is a natural material that makes them a suitable option for people with allergies. The material is soft, durable and resilient, which makes them practical and comfortable for high-traffic areas such as the hallway, kitchen, and bathroom.
