Why choose a runner for your kitchen

Kitchens are typically long, narrow working spaces where most of the wear lands on one strip of floor: the stretch between the sink, hob and worktop. Runner rugs are made for that shape and a runner for the kitchen covers whole strips in one piece, softens hard tile, laminate or vinyl underfoot and catches crumbs and splashes before they reach the floor. Not sure a runner is the right shape for your kitchen? See all our kitchen rugs for rectangular, round and square options in a range of sizes.

Frequently asked questions

Match the length to the run of units and leave 15 to 20 cm of bare floor at each end. A 200 cm runner suits a run of about 2.3 to 2.4 m or the space in front of the sink, 250 cm runners suits about 2.8 to 2.9 m, and 300 cm runners suits about 3.3 to 3.4 m. Measure along the floor from one end of the units to the other, and stop short of the corner, a doorway or any door that swings inwards. Beside an island, measure the length of the island itself.

Patterned and mid tone runners hide everyday marks best. Stripes, checks and oOriental designs break up crumbs, flour and splashes, and rust red, green, blue and multicolour kitchen runners are more forgiving than plain pale shades. A plain cream or beige runner shows spills quickly, and a plain black one shows dust and crumbs. Many designs come in more than one colour, so check the swatches on each product page.

Use a non-slip rug underlay cut slightly smaller than the rug. This helps to hold the kitchen runner in place on tiles, laminate and wood.

Yes, many of our kitchen runners are machine washable, however, others are spot clean only. Where a kitchen runner can be machine washed, check the label for the largest wash size and the temperature. Always check the care label first to make sure the kitchen runner is machine washable and for specific care advice.

Choose where it will sit. Between the sink and hob, or along a run of units, a cotton flatweave or an easy care synthetic is the practical choice: the weave is thin enough to lie flat under your feet, and it can be wiped, shaken out or, where the care label allows, machine washed. Our washable runner rugs are the place to start if that matters most. Beside an island or breakfast bar, away from the sink, jute and wool add texture and warmth. Stripes, checks and Oriental patterns hide everyday marks well, and the colours run from cream, beige and grey to rust red, green and blue.
